Youth Team

Our world-class Youth Team is coached by Tripleshot member and Cycling BC award-winning head coach Lister Farrar and a rotating staff of assistant coaches, including Youth Team alumni.

With an emphasis on group workouts and a cohesive training group, the program helps meet kids' social, physical and athletic needs. Unlike internet coaching programs and individualized high-performance programs, our youth program is about the group. To grow and sustain the group, the program recruits through the schools and velodrome programs, and makes training sessions fun and varied.

Values

Health, fun, ethical sport, teamwork, excellence, persistence, flexibility, and professionalism.

Frequent Group Workouts

Four to six sessions per week to allow for progress and flexibility. Sessions include track cycling, in partnership with the Greater Victoria Velodrome Association. Local races - cyclocross, road, mountain bike and time-trial - are included for fun, training and competition.

Different Sessions

The program meets the recommendations of Cycling Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model with a multi-disciplinary approach that includes seasons focused on road, track, mountain bike, cyclocross and dry-land training. This seasonal approach keeps cycling fresh, allows more training without burnout, and accommodates riders who do other sports.

Room to Grow

The program offers progression through year-round skill development and entry-level competition. Racing is an integrated part of the program once riders are comfortable with their skills. A roster of male and female riders from U11-U19 attend up to 20 races per year and receive race support. Seasonal camps in March (cross/road) and August (mountain bike/track) provide opportunities to further develop skills in a fun environment with the team. With an average of 25 riders, the youth team represents the club at local, provincial, national and international events. For interested riders, high-performance training plans and preparation for provincial and national selection events are offered.

Fees

Fees are kept affordable through our sponsors and grants from the Smith Foundation and the BC Gaming Commission. The youth program’s annual fundraiser is the Tripleshot CrossFondo, a fixture on the Island since 2016.

Cycling Gear and Bikes

Thanks to donations from alumni, pro riders, club members and other cyclists, the program offers loaner clothing and shoes, and a rental program of bikes where nominal fees cover bike maintenance expenses.

Alumni

Highly successful youth program alumni include Olympian Jay Lamoureux (2021 Tokyo Olympic Games; Canadian record holder in Team Pursuit; 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medal); Adam de Vos (pro with Rally Cycling); Riley Pickrell (Israel Cycling Academy; Giro Italia 2024); National Team track cyclists Erin Atwell and Sarah Van Dam
